The Pittsburgh Penguins are hoping to hang on tight to what happened early in the third period in their game Tuesday. The New York Islanders are hoping to forget the early part of their most recent third period. The two teams clash Thursday at PPG Paints Arena in PittsburghPatric Hornqvist proclaimed that the Penguins (11-10-5) reached a turning point for the better Tuesday after he scored a natural hat trick in a span of 2:47 — a club record for a hat trick — in the third period of a 6-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche.Article continues below ...Pittsburgh had taken a 3-0 lead in the first period but gave up three goals in the second. The win broke a two-game losing streak.“I think our response (Tuesday) night is something that we need to (replicate) moving forward. I don’t think we’ve done it in the past http://www.coyotesproshop.com/authentic-alex-goligoski-jersey ,” Penguins winger Zach Aston-Reese said Wednesday. “(It) was a great response from us. I think as a group we’ll be able to bottle that up.”Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017 but has had trouble even remaining in a playoff spot this season. The team is not satisfied with its lack of consistency. The Penguins are hoping Hornqvist provided the spark and the accurate prediction they needed.“You have to be able to roll with the punches when you’re not having success and find ways to work yourself out of it, and when you do have success you have to keep it in perspective in order to sustain it,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “I think we have a mature group. They’ve been on both sides of those circumstances. I think the most important thing — and this is what we talked to the players about — is just staying in the moment.”The Islanders (13-10-3) are looking down at the Penguins in the standings, but they, too, have been inconsistent. Since a five-game winning streak that ended in early November, they are 5-6-1.That includes a 2-1 loss Tuesday against Winnipeg when New York took a 1-0 lead, then lost 3-1 when the Jets scored goals 22 seconds apart early in the third period. The Islanders have been held to a single goal in three of their past five games.“One goal doesn’t do it in this league,” center Mathew Barzal said. “We’ve got to find a way to get on the board, whether that’s the power play or five-on-five. (The Jets are) the best team in the league, I’d say. For us to hang in there and push the pace Christian Dvorak Jersey , I thought, for most of it, it stinks not getting any points.”New York coach Barry Trotz agreed, to a point.“You don’t get paid to hang in,” Trotz said. “You get paid to win.”It’s unclear whether goaltender Robin Lehner will be available for the game Thursday. The Islanders recalled Christopher Gibson to back up Thomas Greiss against the Jets.“He just tweaked a little something,” Trotz said of Lehner. “We didn’t put him on IR, there’s no need for that. We hope he’s good to go in the next day or so.”The Penguins, meanwhile, could be without top-line winger Dominik Simon. He left in the first period of the Colorado game. Sullivan said Simon has a lower-body injury and is day-to-day. CALGARY, Alberta — The Pittsburgh Penguins will be hard pressed to follow their thrilling 6-5 overtime road win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. That’s exactly what they’ll attempt to do when they take on the Flames in Calgary on Thursday.Sidney Crosby scored a highlight-reel goal, his second of the game http://www.coyotesproshop.com/authentic-clayton-keller-jersey , at 2:12 of the extra session to lead the Penguins (4-1-2) to their second straight road victory.Article continues below ...“It doesn’t matter how pretty they are, but it’s nice to get ones like that,” Crosby told reporters after his team practiced in Calgary on Wednesday. “It’s probably been a while since I’ve had a nice one like that. I’ll take it.”Jake Guentzel wasn’t surprised to see his talented linemate deke out a pair of Oilers before lifting a backhand shot under the glove of Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot.“It’s just tough to stop that kind of play and that kind of player. When he’s determined like that, it’s pretty tough to stop him,” said Guentzel, while adding that the Penguins weren’t satisfied with surrendering five goals to the Oilers. “We know we’ve got to tighten up areas and be a little bit better defensively.”Crosby agreed with his teammate’s assessment.“I think we’d like to tighten things up a little bit better defensively, so we’ll look to improve that here (in Calgary),” said Crosby, whose team has gone 3-0-2 since dropping a 5-1 decision at home to the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 6. “We want to really build some momentum here. I think you’re just ready to compete, especially on a road trip like this. It’s big games every night. I think you just try to get up for them and expect anything.”Meanwhile, the Flames (5-4-0) will be looking to rebound from a 3-2 loss they suffered to the Canadiens on Tuesday in Montreal.“You can’t keep chasing games Youth Derek Stepan Jersey ,” said Calgary captain Mark Giordano following the disappointing loss to the Habs. “It’s not a good thing to do in this league and eventually it’s going to come back to bite you and we chased this one all night. We’ve got to learn to simplify when things are going well and put pucks in and try and grind away.“We have to start playing the way we can early in games and we have to get some leads here and some momentum, because it’s not good enough.”Forward Matthew Tkachuk, who had two assists in a losing cause, also expressed his disappointment following Tuesday’s setback.“It was a bad effort after we got away with one in New York thanks to our goalie,” said Tkachuk in regards to the play of netminder David Rittich, who made 44 saves to backstop the Flames to a 4-1 road win over the New York Rangers on Sunday before keeping his team in the game in Montreal by stopping 37 more shots fired his way. “We talked about how our efforts haven’t been great recently and how our goalie’s been bailing us out.”Tkachuk went on to say that the Flames will need to bounce back with much better efforts at home against the Penguins on Thursday night and the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon.“If we expect to play like that, we’ll probably be blown out of the building by these teams coming in,” warned Tkachuk. “So we have to sharpen it up.”
