The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team has played their final game of the 2017 2018 season. The team was upset by the Texas A M Aggies in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. The game ended in disappointing fashion as the Aggies dominated the Tar Heels 86 65. Joel Berry led the Tar Heels with 21 points on 41 shooting.

Texas A M controlled the  Brice Johnson Jersey  game from beginning to finish. A slow start by North Carolina allowed the Aggies to outscore them 42 28 in the first half. Poor shooting put the team in a deeper hole sealing the victory for Texas A M. The Aggies beat North Carolina at their own game by securing rebounds and making trips to the free throw line. It is rare for the Tar Heels to be outrebounded even in losses. A strong effort on the glass by Robert Williams propelled the opposing team to a win.

North Carolina had one of their worst performances of the season in this game. It was as if the rim had a lid on it because the Tar Heels could not buy a basket. It is not out of the ordinary for the team to shoot poorly from deep, and today was no exception. The team shot 19.4 from the three point line and 33.3 from the field. Joel Berry and Luke Maye were the only players to score in double figures for the Tar Heels. Maye would finish the game with 13 points in 29 minutes of play.

The loss was the first time the Tar Heels has not made it past the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament since they failed to make it to the tournament in 2010. The regular season proved that it would be difficult for the program to defend their title. Despite losing 11 games the entire season, the team displayed their flaws on a nightly basis. There were highlights but with an early exit in the postseason they are now of little value.

The Tar Heels showed how troublesome the year could be when they took on the Michigan State Spartans in the PK 80 Invitational championship game in November. Ironically, both teams have been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans were defeated by Syracuse in the final seconds of their game today. When Michigan State and North Carolina faced off in Portland, Oregon the Tar Heels were overshadowed by the frontcourt of the Spartans.

North Carolina would later find itself in the midst of another investigation which is still ongoing. A probe by the FBI on the NCAA meant to uncover corruption within the sport also revealed that a former player, Tony Bradley, was mentioned as one of the players who received improper benefits. The NCAA has yet to hand any punishment to any of the teams listed in the probe.

There were also some bright spots this year with Luke Maye becoming a household name. He began the season with one of the best stretches in North Carolina basketball history. His clutch basket in the previous season’s tournament put him in the spotlight and he has displayed his potential. He still has aspects to his game that he needs to work on, but with such a dramatic increase in minutes he will need time to adjust.

A bittersweet celebration is also in order for Joel Berry. Berry has played his last game as a senior today. His four year career ends with two appearances as an NCAA All Tourney player, one mention as an NCAA All Region player, and the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in 2017. He followed in the footsteps of North Carolina’s great point guards featuring the likes of Marcus Paige and Kendall Marshall.

With an early exit in the books for North Carolina, the program looks forward to a reload in the summer. New recruits will have to adjust to the college game quickly if they expect to return to an elite level. They will also have to prepare for any punishment they could receive from the NCAA.
